Why Colbert will get away with it.
Much concern is stirring with the debate with “equal air time” in the presidential race. What is equal air time you ask? Equal air time comes from “equal opportunities” that requires that broadcast stations give candidates the same equal and unbiased political air time for each candidates. If one candidate is given the possibility for air time, another candidate must receive equal opportunities to have the same amount of time in their programs. Also, the air time must be reaching roughly the same size audience for all of the candidates. If air time is free then free air time must be given if request by a candidate within a week. Since Colbert has his own show, “The Colbert Report” this gives him a lot of air time other candidates won’t receive.
As of now, a few loop holes are present for Mr. Colbert to jump through. First is being a “legally qualified candidate.” Until the paperwork has been approved for his presidental race, he is not responsible for the air time he has receiving as of now. Another loophole is that news interviews are not counted toward a candidate’s equal air time. Interviews are treated as news worthy events and are treated as news instead of campaigning. Colbert could use this approach and claim he is reporting news, which is what his television show is all about. Finally, since “The Colbert Report” is not on public television, it is harder to receive equal air time due to its select audience. However, this could more slow the process instead of actually getting around it. All said, Stephen Colbert is still in the clear as of now, and if other candidates want equal air time, they should get their own show.
I also would like to thank Ryan McCabe in designing the sites new banner that looks as awesome and American as apple pie and fireworks.
